Praise Band

Do you love singing or playing an instrument? Would you like to explore that gift, while worshipping the Lord? Come join the FUMC Youth Praise Band! During our two Sunday practices a month (1st and 3rd Sunday of the month), we will work together to create an exciting experience for our youth worship services on Sunday evenings (2nd and 4th Sunday of the month).

F² is a revamped Sunday night experience for our students that will take place at 5:30 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month. Think Fusion but kicked up a notch! F² will be an opportunity for Food and Fellowship, hence the “F²”. By meeting twice a month, we hope and encourage you and your family to take the other times and be together, have fun together, or rest. Can we get an amen?

Wednesday Night Small Groups

Wednesday night small groups are the heart of this youth ministry and we have a team of amazing individuals, who volunteer countless hours to minister to our students weekly. During small groups, our students have an opportunity to sit with peers of their own grade and gender to talk about life and their walk with the Lord. Before dismissing to their normal small groups, students in 8-12th grade will meet in the youth room for a quick prerecorded message by Stephen Racine, which gives small group leaders an opportunity to expand upon this message during the small group meeting!

Check out our youth calendar!

Children of all ages are welcome at Columbus First!

Nursery care is provided during all Sunday worship services for children 3 years old and younger. Please bring them to the check in desk on the first floor of the Fletcher-Jones Building. Sunday School is a continuation of the special care your child will receive.

On Sundays for our school aged children, (4K-5th grades) there is a check in desk on the 2nd floor of the Fletcher-Jones Building. From there, kids can hang out in our JAM (Jesus and Me) Room for fellowship and fun beginning at 9:30 a.m. This is a space just for kids with lots of hands on games and activities. Sunday School is held right there in the classrooms of our Children’s Wing.

During the school year, there are lots of opportunities for children. Following our Wednesday Night Supper, we offer activities from fine arts to bible study to praise and worship for grades 4K-5th grade. Children check in at the 2nd floor of the Fletcher-Jones Building and can again hang out in the JAM Room from 5:30 until programs begin.

Our church nursery is open on Wednesday nights for children 3 and under so parents can participate in our adult small group ministry.

Contact for more information.

At Columbus FUMC, where our mission is to make, grow, and send disciples, we believe that we are discipled to be sent to join God’s mission in the world.  God is at work in our community, and we want to be a part of what God is doing!  We have opportunities for everyone to be in service from engaging with our local and international partners to volunteering with our church sponsored ministries.

Franklin Academy Magnet School

Just a few blocks away, the oldest public school in Mississippi serves pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students from the greater downtown Columbus area.  We partner with them in multiple ways by supporting and encouraging teachers, feeding and engaging students, sponsoring events, and sprucing up the facility.  We believe that investing in our students is investing in the future of our community.

We have a great partnership with Franklin Academy here in Columbus! We serve in a wide variety of ways. Our volunteers receive and sort delivery from the Mississippi Food Network, distribute food to teachers and counselors, provide meals for teachers, assist in building maintenance, and provide teachers with school supplies and prayers. We would love for you to get involved in this ministry as we live out our membership vows of prayer, presence, gifts, service, and witness! Please check out events page for serving opportunities.

International Mission Partnership

Internationally, we partner with Hispañola Mountain Ministries in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.  Multiple Columbus First mission teams consisting of youth and adults spend weeks out of the year volunteering with our international partner through construction and medical missions.  Each year, the teams come back with a better understanding of themselves, God, and what it means to be in ministry in the world.  If you are interested in joining one of these teams or hearing about what we do, let us know EMAIL US

The Center for Counseling Ministries offers individual counseling for those who are experiencing difficulties with issues such as anxiety and depression, grief, trauma, poor self-esteem, and child and adolescent concerns related to issues with family, school or peer relationships.  In 2016 Shepherd’s Touch Counseling Center was renamed to honor the life and practice of Walt Porter, PhD., ordained UMC minister, licensed professional counselor, and Diplomat in the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy.   Dr. Porter enjoyed his career in the church and approached it with reference and vitality.  His career as a counselor demonstrated his deep appreciation that striving for wholeness meant integrating mind, body, soul, and spirit so that our individual and unique potential endowed us by God might be realized.

Lucy Flowers is a licensed professional counselor and is on staff at the Walt Porter Center for Counseling Ministries.
