Liturgical Year

Our congregation, like many other churches, follows a common liturgical cycle of colors and scripture readings throughout each year. The purpose is to collectively move through the different Biblical readings in a way that will help us best experience the Christian story.

  • Advent - the four Sundays before Christmas; preparation for the coming of Christ.

  • Christmas - from Dec. 25 through Jan. 6; celebration of the birth of Christ.

  • Epiphany - from Jan. 6 until the begining of Lent; celebration of the revelation of Christ to the world.

  •  Lent - 40 days plus Sundays, before Easter; commemoration of the 40 years Israel spent in the wilderness and the 40 days Jesus spent in prayer and temptation; a time of penitence in preparation for Easter.  Holy Week, when we remember the last week of Jesus’’ life, is part of Lent.  Maundy or Holy Thursday, the day when we reenact Jesus’ crucifixion, is the most somber day of the Christian year.

  • Easter - Easter Sunday and 50 days afterward; celebration of the resurrection of Christ.

  • Pentecost - 7th Sunday after Easter; Christian celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the church.

  • Trinity Sunday - First Sunday after Pentecost; celebration of the Trinity: one God in three persons - Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

  • Sundays After Pentecost - also called Ordinary Time; begins the day after Pentecost and ends the day before the First Sunday of Advent.

  • All Hallows Eve/All Saints Sunday - Oct. 31st & Nov. 1st; celebration of the communion of saints, all Christian people of every time and place.

  • Christ the King - the last day in the Christian year; celebration of Christ as King and Lord of all creation.
